Bilkis Bano Family
Bilkis was born in 1981 in a big family. She spent her whole childhood with her family in Gujarat. Bano’s father’s name is Abdul Ghachi and her mother’s name is not available. Let me tell you that, in the 2002 Godhra riots in Gujarat, she, her mother, and her siblings were gang-raped. The rapists killed her 8 family members and tried to kill Bilkis, but she felt unconscious and the rapists thought she was dead. Out of 17 members of her family, 8 were killed, and others are missing.
What happened to Bilkis Bano?
On 27 February 2002, Gujarat turned violent after the Sabarmati train was burnt in Godhra. 59 karsevaks were killed on the train. Fearing the outbreak of violence, a then 5-month pregnant Bilkis ran from Randhikpur with her three years old daughter and 15 other family members. They took shelter in the Chhaparvad district. However, on 3 March, they were attacked by about 20-30 people armed with swords, sickles, and sticks.

There were 11 accused men among them. Bilkis, her mother, and three other ladies were raped and brutally assaulted. Only Bilkis, a man, and a 3-year-old survived the attack. As per multiple reports, Bano regained consciousness three hours after the incident and after borrowing clothes from an Adivasi lady made her way to the Limkheda police station to register a complaint.

Bilkis was taken to a hospital for a medical test only after she reached the Godhra relief camp. Her case was taken up by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Supreme Court, which instructed an inquiry by the CBI. The court held that Jaswantbhai Nai, Govindbhai Nai, and Naresh Kumar Mordhiya (deceased) had raped Bilkis Bano, while Shailesh Bhatt had killed her daughter, Saleha, by hitting her on the ground.

Others who were sentenced are Radheshyam Shah, Bipin Chandra Joshi, Pradeep Vohania, Kesarbhai Vohania, Bakabhai Vohania, Rajubhai Soni, Nitesh Bhatt, Ramesh Chandana, and Head Constable Somabhai Gori. As of 1 April 2022, Shah then filed a plea in the Supreme Court, claiming that he had been in jail for 15 years and four months without remission. Later, the 11 prisoners in the Bilkis case walked out of the Godhra sub-jail.
